At the age of 16, Botham left school with the intention of playing cricket for Somerset. However, the county deemed him too young for a professional career, so he instead joined the ground crew at Lord’s as a ground boy.
In 1973, Botham made two senior appearances for Somerset, scoring four runs and taking one wicket for 14 runs. His first bowling success occurred when he dismissed Geoff Howarth lbw while playing against Surrey.
Sir Ian Botham represented England in Test and One-Day International cricket. Known for his aggressive right-handed batting and swing bowling as a right-arm fast-medium bowler, Botham scored 14 centuries in Test cricket, achieving his highest score of 208.
From 1986 to 1988, he held the world record for the most Test wickets. In 1980, he became only the second player in Test history to score 100 runs and take ten wickets in the same match.
