The Bale Mountains is a fantastic spot to discover the Ethiopian Wolf, a unique type of wild dog that is fond of the Sanetti Plateau. This plateau is located way up high, at a whopping 4000 meters above sea level. Although sightings are rather regular in this area, they are never guaranteed. The Bale Mountains in Ethiopia are a fantastic place to see wildlife. They are easy to get to and have lots of animals to spot. In this place, you can discover baboons, Bale and Colobus monkeys, chameleons, and warthogs. Lions, hyenas, and leopards can sometimes be found wandering through the forests, although it’s quite uncommon to spot them.
To reach the Bale Mountains, you usually take a domestic flight to the nearby town of Robe. The Bale Mountains Lodge is just a 2-hour drive away from here. If you’re staying in Dinsho, it’s a little closer to Robe by car. One awesome way to reach the Bale Mountains is by taking a road trip through the breathtaking Rift Valley. Driving through a country can teach you a lot more than flying above it.
Simien Mountains Safari

Gelada Monkeys symbolize the Simien Mountains. These monkeys are called ‘bleeding heart monkeys’ because of the heart-shaped mark on their chests. They are only found in Ethiopia. Geladas in the Simiens are used to humans, so you can move among them while they roam and play on the plateaus. In the Simiens, near Chennek campsite, you can spot the Walia Ibex, a unique species found only in Ethiopia. Walia Ibex, a threatened species, has a population in the hundreds. Unlike Gelada Monkeys, these beasts are rare to find in the mountains. It’s better to visit on a clear day for a chance to spot them. In addition to Geladas and Walias, the Simiens also have many birds like raptors, Lammergeiers, and thick-billed ravens.
The northwestern half of the Simien Mountains massif in northern Ethiopia’s Amhara region is home to the Simien Mountains National Park, 900 km north of Addis Ababa. The park is located in Debark, Adi Arkay, and Janamora. The Simien Mountains, located in the center of Gondar, Lalibela, and Axum, is a must-visit spot on the Historic North Circuit. The closest big city to the Simiens is Gondar. You can easily get there by taking a domestic flight in Ethiopia. From here, it’s a short drive to Debark, Simien Mountains headquarters. The trip to the park’s entry gate at Buyit Ras is 14 kilometers from Debark.
Gambella National Park
Gambella is the best place in Ethiopia for wildlife adventures. Gambella is a special safari spot in East Africa. It has a big population, like the game reserves in Tanzania and Kenya. You can explore the remote and hard-to-reach wilderness during the day and stay in cozy tented camps at night.
This place is home to large herds of antelope, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, warthogs, lions, hippos, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and more. Gambella is known for its massive antelope and buffalo migrations. Unfortunately, the park is often overlooked due to limited access and accommodations. Gambella is only reachable by charter flight, so it’s more expensive than other national parks.
