Amber Liu Opens Up About Sexuality and Relationships
Amber Liu initially gained recognition in the K-Pop scene when she was discovered by a talent agency in 2008. Since then, she has become widely recognized in both the K-Pop and American pop music realms.
Over the course of this decade-long musical journey, she has consistently created music while staying authentic to herself. One of the aspects she openly and honestly addresses is her gender and experiences with love.
What Amber Liu Says About Gender and the LGBTQ Community?
Amber Liu has consistently been transparent about her sexuality, gender, and expressions of love, evident in her music. In a 2018 Billboard interview around the release of her mixtape “Rogue Rouge,” she delved into various topics, including her romantic relationships, androgynous identity, and her support for the LGBTQ community.
During the interview, Amber expressed herself as an ally of the LGBTQ community, emphasizing that one’s sexuality is a personal matter that should not be subject to scrutiny. While she hasn’t explicitly discussed her gender, she identifies as androgynous.
Amber shared her perspective on love and acceptance, emphasizing that everyone deserves to love and be loved for who they are. She spoke warmly about her LGBTQ friends, advocating for understanding and acceptance.
In particular, she shared positive experiences, such as spending time with a transgender friend who found joy in being true to themselves.
Throughout the conversation, Amber reiterated the mantra, “Love is love,” stressing the importance of fostering genuine connections. In her ‘Three Million Years’ music video, she wore pins with a red heart and a rainbow peace sign, symbolizing love’s universal nature, irrespective of sexual orientation.
While not openly discussing her gender identity, Amber described herself as an androgynous tomboy with tattoos and piercings. Despite facing criticism for defying societal expectations, she responded by embracing her individuality, getting more tattoos to assert her identity.
In a February 2019 interview with What The Kpop, Amber discussed the challenges of conforming to societal body image expectations. Battling depression and frustration, she highlighted the importance of self-acceptance with the support of understanding friends.
Amber Liu Goes All-in in Love
In an interview with Billboard, Liu opened up about her experiences in the realm of love. She candidly confessed to being somewhat inept at dating, acknowledging that she was cautious and admittedly picky when it came to relationships.
Liu attributed her selectiveness to her inherently “all-in” personality, clarifying that she only entered relationships with individuals she could envision marrying. Reflecting on her past, she revealed that it took her five years to move on from one of her previous boyfriends.
Despite being an artist who has penned numerous love songs, Liu confessed that she didn’t have a fixed definition for the term “love.” According to her, the meaning of love evolves with each relationship, and she acknowledged experiencing changes in her perception of the word since saying her first “I love you” at the age of 16.
